Competing at the Dutch National Ice Sailing Championship last week, they showed a different side of their sailing talent. Kalle finished in a good 13th place, but his brother Sven did even better. Finishing just in the top 5, he was disappointed he did not win but was still satisfied with the result.

This year will be a busy one for the Coster’s. Not only the 2012 Olympic Games but also the ISAF World Cup is part of their calendar. By winning the North American Championship and finishing 2nd in the Rolex Miami OCR, they started the 2012 season very well. Because of this good form they jumped a few places up on the ISAF World Ranking. They went from the 13th place to the 5th place, which was a tremendous step forward. They hope to be just as successful while competing in the 2012 Delta Lloyd Regatta.

Last year Team Coster finished in 5th place at the 2011 Delta Lloyd Regatta. This year the Delta Lloyd Regatta will take place from Tuesday 22nd until Saturday the 26th of May in Medemblik, the Netherlands. During this week participants from all kinds of different Olympic sailing classes will compete against each other. This year the event will celebrate its 28th anniversary.

Over 40 sailors participated in the 2012 National Championship. On Saturday the wind was around three knots. Only three races were held and at the end of the day Sven Koster, Olympic sailor at the 2012 Olympics, was in the lead.

On Sunday the wind was a lot stronger, around 7 to 10 knots, pushing the more heavy sailors in an advantage. Five races were held on this second and final day of the Championship. The 26 year old Jan Heida from Sneek finished first after seven races. He is an up and coming talent. Heida just recently participated in this relatively dangerous sport. He is an active Ice sailor since 2009. Ice sailors can reach speeds up to 130 kilometers per hour.

This year the Sailors Home will be bigger than ever. A larger accommodation will be arranged, so more people can enjoy the number one meeting spot at the Delta Lloyd Regatta. The facilities are well taken care of. There will be wireless internet, music and local catering.  To stay informed during the Delta Lloyd Regatta, races and results will be shown in the Arma Rental Sailors Home. The Sailors Home also provides the guests with updates and details about the Delta Lloyd Regatta.

The engine runs on a green and eco friendly fuel which is called Natural Gas. Natural Gas consists primarily of methane (CH4) and other hydrocarbons such as ethane. Compared to petrol oil and diesel oil Natural Gas has the advantage that the emission of harmful substances is less. The Delta Lloyd Regatta cares about the environment and will continue developing in the future.

Amsterdam 8th November 2011 – The Delta Lloyd Regatta will no longer be part of the 2013 ISAF Sailing World Cup. The decision not to sign-up to the ISAF Sailing World Cup has been taken after careful consultation with the Royal Netherlands Yachting Union and the title sponsor, Delta Lloyd.

As one of the most innovative and attractive World Cup events, the Delta Lloyd Regatta was part of the ISAF Sailing World Cup for Olympic classes since the introduction of the international circuit in 2008. From 2013 ISAF has decided to take a different approach which will result in all the rights of a World Cup event being transferred to ownership of ISAF. In the proposed contract the organizing committee is obliged to release almost all commercial rights (including title sponsor rights) without any financial compensation.

The organizing committee of the Delta Lloyd Regatta has informed the ISAF they are willing to support a uniform World Cup format but are not able to simply transfer 27 years of history and value to a third party in one transaction.

The Chairman of the organizing committee, Arjen Rahusen commented: “As an organisation we have tried everything to conform to the wishes and obligations of the ISAF. We strongly believe in a uniform World Cup sailing format to propel international sailing to a higher level. We are also of the opinion that this is a process which takes several years. When an event has to transfer almost all rights in one transaction without any room for negotiation, you reach a point where it does not make sense to proceed and it would be financially irresponsible to do so. We also believe that outside the ISAF Sailing World Cup we will be able to deliver an perhaps even better and more innovative event. We will have more freedom specifically in areas that will allow us to be more innovative. The ability to offer prize money in the future should also guarantee a strong field of participants. In addition, a new strong European sailing circuit with Kiel, Weymouth, Barcelona and Aahrus is a serious consideration.”
