Clapcich: ‘The Delta Lloyd Regatta is always a high level test for every sailor!’
Francesca Clapcich recently switched back to the Laser Radial class after competing in the 49erFX during the Rio Olympics. The Italian was one of our first entrants. We asked her why the Delta Lloyd Regatta is so special to her.
Have you attended the Delta Lloyd Regatta before?
Yes! In the Laser Radial class and also in the 49erFX class. It’s always a really challenging regatta!
Why are you attending this year’s Delta Lloyd Regatta?
The regatta is always a high level test for every sailor. Every year the best sailors attend the regatta and the conditions are tough. This year the regatta fits perfectly in my schedule, I need to make a comeback to racing in the Laser and it is a nice test.
What are your expectations of the event?
Like always the organization is perfect. Expectations are always high and I am sure it will be perfect.
Are you attending any other events within Europe? Why are you choosing these events?
I’ll try to do as many regattas as possible. Currently I am planning to attend Cadiz, TROFEO Sofia in Palma and the Regatta in Kiel. I need to be confident again with a laser fleet and also try to win some points for the World Sailing Ranking.
In London you competed in the Laser Radial class. In Rio you competed in the 49er FX class. Why have you chosen to step back into the Laser Radial?
After Rio we decided to stop sailing in 49erFX. After some time had passed, I had the motivation again to sail but I wanted to do a project on my own. I already sailed a laser and I know how to train to make a comeback at a high level in a single-handed boat. Sailing with Giulia (in FX) was one of the best experiences in my life, inside the water and outside. We spent lot of time together and we really enjoyed it. I cannot imagine finding another person to sail with so I prefer to sail alone again.
In which class will we be seeing you in Tokyo 2020?
Hopefully in the Laser but the way there is very long. I try to enjoy this journey every day. To sail with a smile and enjoy every training at home every single day. It’ s a nice job!
Do you have anything to add to this interview?
I want to say to all sailors racing in Medemblik to enjoy every single day!
